Track and Field Bears Dominate Springfield Showdown

March 22, 2024

SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State track and field team had a dominant day at the Springfield Showdown here Friday with a 99-point effort against cross-town foes Evangel and Drury.

The Valor and Panthers finished the meet with 48 and 20 points, respectively, in the women's division.

The Bears started the outdoor season with first-place finishes in 11 of 15 events.

Cheyenne White started the Bears off on the right foot with an attempt of 43.22 meters in the javelin. White also took first in the Bears' home meet last season with an attempt of 39.40m.

Missouri State broke a facility record in the 4x100-meter relay. The team of Brianna Howard, Olivia Rogers, Kayleigh Jenkins and Alyssa Ball won the race with a time of 46.51, .95 of a second faster than the previous record set at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium last season.

The final facility record broken Friday came from Mia McLain in the 3000-meter run. McLain won the race in 10:26.41 which beat the previous record by approximately six seconds. The old record was set at Allison South Stadium's debut meet in 2016 by MoState's own Jessica Allen.

The Bears swept the podium in five events. In the 800-meter run, Ella Cronhardt led the way for the Bears with a time of 2:19.58. Mary Margaret Harris finished second with a time of 2:21.07 and Victory Ifah finished third with a time of 2:22.36.

In the 1500-meter run, Harris finished first with a time of 4:43.56. Tabitha Fox and Cronhardt followed in second and third with times of 4:47.80 and 4:48.81, respectively.

After McLain's record-breaking win, Riley Bryan was the next to cross the finish line for MoState. She finished with a time of 10:26.96 and Margo Nea was in third with a time of 10:42.64.

With five runners competing in both hurdle events, the Bears still managed to sweep the podium despite close competition. Kamdyn Moody led the way for Missouri State with a time of 15.02 in the 100-meter hurdles. She was followed by Kate Anderson and DaeLin Switzer with respective times of 15.25 and 15.27.

A new trio of Bears held down the podium in the 400-meter hurdles. Meghan Halstead crossed the finish line first with a time of 1:02.37 followed by Magdalena Burdova in second with a time of 1:03.68. Mirabella Redman rounded out the Bears with a third-place finish and a time of 1:05.56.

Prior to the final event, Missouri State took the time to recognize their 11 seniors, as well as the seniors from Drury and Evangel.

"Today was a great day!" head coach Jordan Fife said. "It's always a big deal when our athletes can compete with so many familiar faces in the stands. This is hopefully the start of a great meet showcasing all of the collegiate track and field athletes in Springfield. We had some tremendous season opening performances."

The Bears will stay in-state for their next meet when they make the trip to Southwest Baptist for the SBU Bearcat Invitational on March 28 and 29.
