Track Bears Excel at Washburn Meet

January 20, 2024

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Missouri State track and field team resumed its indoor season Saturday, finishing fifth out of 22 teams at the Washburn Rust Buster here.

The Bears collected 18 top-10 individual finishes to help them collect 45.5 points at the meet.

"The meet was aptly named the Washburn Rust Buster. Several performances left us realizing there's a lot of work to do the next few weeks and several others were really solid openers," head coach Jordan Fife said.

Mia McLain brought home a first-place finish in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:09.57. This was McLain's first track meet for the Bears and the Bears' first first-place finish in an event this season.

Three Bears recorded second-place finishes for Missouri State. DaeLin Switzer placed second in the high jump invite with an attempt of 1.68 meters and Kamdyn Moody placed second in the high jump open with an attempt of 1.55 meters. Three more Bears finished within the top-10 in high jump events.

Brooke Jenkins and Kambree Gibson both placed in the top-10 in other jumping events. Jenkins placed 10th in the long jump with her attempt of 5.19 meters for her second top-10 finish in a row in the event. Gibson was the Bears sole representative in the triple jump where she landed in seventh with an attempt of 10.42 meters.

Olivia Rogers ended the meet with not one, but two top-10 finishes. In the 60-meter dash, the freshman placed ninth with a time of 7.80. Later in the meet, Rogers placed seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.54.

The team made its debut in distance events at this meet. Mary Margaret Harris led the Bears in the mile run with a time of 5:05.89 to finish in second place. McLain was not far behind in seventh with a time of 5:10.88 and Tabitha Fox finished in ninth with a time of 5:11.47.

Harris had another top-10 finish in the 800-meter run. With a time of 2:17.49, she finished in fourth. Right behind her was Ella Cronhardt with a time of 2:21.56 in fifth place.

"Indoor is a short season and we don't have a lot of room for errors from this point forward. We know this is a talented group and we're confident they're going to get it all figured out," Fife said.

The Bears are back in action next week when they make another trip to Pittsburg State for the Pittsburg State Invitational.
