Biography

At MSU: Rusty Wheat was listed as the backup to veteran all-conference right guard Steve Kohenskey coming out of spring practice. He redshirted last year in his first season at MSU.

Background: An outstanding two-way tackle at Roxana, Wheat was a first team all-stater and a big factor in the Shells' offense that racked up 349 yards a game and a defense that allowed just 9.5 points a contest. His team's rushing attack averaged 241 yards per game, most with Wheat clearing the way. On defense, he had 77 tackles, three sacks, three fumble recoveries and 15 tackles for loss. He was named to the Super 30 recruits list by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Wheat also was one of the top heavyweight wrestlers in the St. Louis area, reaching the state finals.

Personal: His full name is Russell Allen Wheat. He was born January 21, 1986, in Alton, Illinois. Rusty is the son of Russ and Lynda Wheat. Wheat's academic major at MSU is private and commercial recreation.
