SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The list of postseason accolades for Missouri State expanded further Wednesday, as third baseman
Jake Burger and shortstop
Jeremy Eierman picked up first-team All-America citations from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). Additionally, Eierman was named a first-team
Perfect Game/Rawlings College All-American, while Burger garnered second-team recognition from
PG.
Eierman becomes the 12th Bear to earn first-team All-America recognition, while the duo is just the third in in the 54-year history of the Missouri State program to gain first-team honors in the same season. Matt Hall (
D1Baseball/Collegiate Baseball) and
Bryan Young (NCBWA) accomplished the same feat in 2015, after Ben Carlson (ABCA) and Tim Clubb (
Collegiate Baseball) became the first MSU teammates to earn first-team All-America laurels in the same season in 2008.
The 11th overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft, Burger currently ranks seventh nationally with 22 home runs, joining forces with Eierman to form the top power duo at the Division I level with 45 combined round-trippers this spring. Burger, the 2017 MVC Player of the Year, also leads the circuit and ranks sixth nationally in runs scored (69), while rating among the nation's top 25 hitters in total bases (160) and RBIs (65) as well.Â
A semifinalist for both the Dick Howser Trophy and Golden Spikes Award, he ranks second among all active Division I hitters with 47 career home runs, while his 241 career hits is the 11th best total in Missouri State history. Additionally, he is just the second Bear to earn first-team All-America recognition in three consecutive seasons, joining Nick Petree (2011-13) for that honor.
Eierman, who was a second-team All-America choice of
Collegiate Baseball and a third-team honoree by
Baseball America, became the third Bear in the last six seasons to be named the NCBWA's District VI most outstanding player last week, joining Burger (2016) and Nick Petree (2012) on Missouri State's list of honorees. He was also named a semifinalist for the NCBWA's Dick Howser Trophy and earned First-Team All-MVC honors after turning in a breakthrough spring for the Bears, both at the plate and in the middle of the MSU infield as one of the Valley's top defenders.Â
The Warsaw, Mo., product shares the No. 5 spot nationally with 23 home runs and is a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award honoring the nation's top shortstop. He turned in an NCAA postseason to remember, helping the Bears to their third Division I Regional crown by hitting a pair of home runs in MSU's opening-round victory over Oklahoma State, as well as a tie-breaking two-run shot in the deciding game against Arkansas. Eierman homered for a fourth time in NCAA play in the Bears' opening game against TCU at the Fort Worth Super Regional as well and hit .333 in MSU's six postseason games.Â
In addition to picking up spots on two All-America squads Wednesday, both Burger and Eierman landed spots on the ABCA/Rawlings All-Midwest Region first team as well. Junior left-hander
Doug Still—an 11th round pick of the San Francisco Giants earlier in the day—was named a second-team All-Midwest Region selection of the coaches as well.
