Bears Hang on for Sweep at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Missouri State jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held off a late Delaware charge Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium to complete the series sweep of the Blue Hens with a 9-6 victory.

The Bears (24-10, 12-3 Conference USA) scored on RBI singles by Max Knight and Gabe Roessler in addition to a balk in the second for a 3-0 lead, then got a two-run double from Roessler, wild pitch and 117 mile per hour RBI single off Caden Bogenpohl's bat to lead 7-0 in the fourth.

Delaware (10-26, 1-14) ended Jason Schaaf's (2-1) stretch of 10 consecutive batters retired and 11.2 scoreless innings with a solo homer in the fourth, then hit a two-run shot in the sixth and three-run bomb in the seventh to close to 7-6.

Curry Sutherland moved over from third base to the mound after the home run and eventually got a strikeout with the bases loaded to preserve the lead, then launched his 10th homer of the year in the eighth to make it 8-6.

The Blue Hens loaded the bases with one-out singles in the eighth before Max Knight worked out of the jam, Roessler led off the ninth with his sixth homer of the year, and Knight wriggled out of three walks in the ninth to complete his third save of the season.

Roessler collected three hits for the third straight day and drove in four runs, while Knight and Charlie Carter had two hits each as the bottom of the order went 7-for-12 with five RBIs and five runs on the day. Sutherland went 2-for-3 and scored three times.

The Bears return home Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. game with Missouri at Hammons Field. Tickets to all home games are available here.
