TUCSON, Ariz. – Led by junior third baseman
Jake Burger's third-straight selection to
Collegiate Baseball's All-America squad, three Missouri State standouts were named to one of the organization's 2017 Division I All-America teams. Sophomore shortstop
Jeremy Eierman joined Burger as a second-team honoree, while junior pitcher
Jake Fromson picked up third-team laurels Thursday.
Burger, who was a consensus All-America choice last spring after picking up third-team honors from
Collegiate Baseball as a freshman in 2015, becomes just the second Bear in the 54-year history of the program to earn All-America recognition in three different seasons (Nick Petree, 2011-13).
A junior from Chesterfield, Mo., Burger leads the MVC and ranks fourth nationally in homers, joining forces with Eierman to form the top power duo at the Division I level with 41 combined round-trippers this spring. Burger, the 2017 MVC Player of the Year, also leads the circuit and ranks fifth nationally in runs scored (67), while rating among the nation's top 25 hitters in slugging (.691), RBIs (63) and total bases (154) as well. A semifinalist for both the Dick Howser Trophy and Golden Spikes Award, he ranks second among all active Division I hitters with 47 career home runs, while his 236 career hits is the 14th best total in Missouri State history. Additionally, he is just the third Bear to earn First-Team All-MVC honors in three consecutive seasons, joining Steve Hacker (1993-95) and Kevin Medrano (2009-12) on that distinguished list.
Eierman, who was a
Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA Freshman All-American in 2016, becomes the sixth Bear overall to earn All-America recognition in multiple seasons. He was named a semifinalist for the NCBWA's Dick Howser Trophy and earned First-Team All-MVC honors after turning in a breakthrough spring for the Bears, both at the plate and in the middle of the MSU infield as one of the Valley's top defenders. The Warsaw, Mo., product ranks 10th nationally with 19 home runs and is a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award honoring the nation's top shortstop. He also led the Valley in RBIs (26) and runs scored (27) during conference play, while ranking second in slugging, on-base percentage and home runs in helping the Bears to their fifth MVC regular-season title with an 18-1 league mark. Eierman has been one of the league's top defensive standouts as well, with just 10 errors in 242 total defensive chances at shortstop, good for a .959 fielding percentage.
Fromson a first-time honoree who becomes the Bears' 38th All-American, brings a league-best 1.86 earned run average to go along with an 8-3 mound mark and two saves in 33 total appearances into the postseason. He became the first reliever to earn the Valley's Pitcher of the Year award since WSU's Marc Bluma in 1998 and the fifth Bear in the last 10 seasons to claim the honor. Fromson was particularly dominant in MVC play, going 4-0 and allowing only two earned runs while striking out 32 and walking just three in 26.0 innings over 12 appearances. A right-hander from Lee's Summit, Mo., he has allowed MVC lows for overall hits (35), earned runs (14) and opponent batting (.148), while ranking sixth overall in the league with 81 strikeouts in 67.2 innings. Fromson also leads all Division I pitchers in WHIP (0.72) and ranks third nationally in hits allowed per nine innings (4.79) and 17th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.23).
Missouri State (40-17) enters NCAA Championship play as the No. 2 seed in the Fayetteville Regional, where they will square off against No. 3 Oklahoma State (30-25) Friday (June 2) at 2 p.m. (CDT) at Baum Stadium to open postseason play.
