Baseball Bears Fall to SEMO in 13 Innings, 8-7

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- What was a shootout early turned into a battle of bullpens Tuesday evening at Hammons Field as Southeast Missouri State outlasted Missouri State by an 8-7 final in 13 innings. The game was tied at 7-7 after five innings before remaining that way until the deciding 13th.

A one-out error and a walk in the top of the 13th set the stage for SEMO right fielder Louie Haseltine to knock the game-winning single to left for his fourth RBI of the game.

The SEMO bullpen held Missouri State hitless after the seventh inning, as the Bears’ last hit came on Luke Voit’s single to lead off the seventh, capping a 4-for-4 day for the sophomore catcher.

Missouri State’s bullpen allowed just three hits after the fifth. J.C. Casey allowed one in 2.2 innings and Dan Kickham (1-1) gave up two in 4.2 frames while taking the loss on the unearned run in the 13th. Clay Murphy pitched the final two outs for MSU, fanning both batters he faced.

The game featured 36 strikeouts, 19 from Southeast pitchers and 17 by the MSU staff.

Brent Seifert gave the Bears a 3-0 lead with a three-run homer in the first, SEMO scored two in the third and five in the fifth to go ahead 7-3, and Missouri State tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with Tyler Paxson’s two-run single and a two-out, two-run double from Keenen Maddox for the 7-7 tie.

Jake Powers started for the Bears and saw his 10-inning scoreless streak end in the third. Aaron Conway’s leadoff triple in the first was the 12th of his career, moving him into a tie for sixth in school history.

The Redhawks moved to 10-6 on the year, while the Bears dropped to 8-8 with their fifth consecutive loss. SEMO’s win snapped MSU’s 14-game home winning streak in the series.

The Bears and Redhawks close the series at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
