Helms, Medrano Enjoy Big Days as Fall Series Remains Even

Oct. 13, 2011

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Kevin Medrano ran his streak of consecutive hits to 11 at-bats, and Spiker Helms drove in the decisive runs in a 14-inning thriller Thursday, as Team Overstreet and Team Lawson split a pair of games as part of the Missouri State baseball team's fall world series at Hammons Field.

Medrano went 7-for-7 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in an 8-6 loss for Team Lawson in Game 3, which was completed Thursday after being suspended due to darkness on Tuesday with the two clubs tied at 5-5 in the 10th inning.

It was Helms, however, who had the last laugh, driving in a pair of runs with a one-out double to break a 6-all tie in the top of the 14th.

The key hit for Helms came on the heels of a 12th-inning run-scoring single and made a winner of Nick Petree, who worked the final 4.0 innings in relief.

Medrano continued to swing a red-hot bat in the nightcap, recording hits in his first four at-bats to help Lawson's squad build a seven-run advantage. The senior infielder would finish the game 4-for-5 with a triple and three runs scored in the 8-2 win for Team Lawson.

After the tough-luck setback in the opener, Lawson's team broke on top with three in the first inning off Jake Powers. They added another tally in the third on a Brett Marshall grounder that brought Medrano home following a lead-off single.

Team Lawson put the contest out of reach in the fourth with three more runs, highlighted by RBI triples from Medrano and Patrick Drake and a run-scoring single from Brent Seifert. Trey Massenberg completed the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the eighth that drove home Keenen Maddox.

Team Overstreet scored its only two runs of the game courtesy of three walks and a hit batsman in the seventh inning against Seth Swafford. Joey Hawkins recorded the only two hits of the game for Overstreet's club.

Cody Schumacher picked up the victory for Team Lawson after allowing just one hit while fanning five over four scoreless innings. Tyler Burgess and Erik Shannahan combined for three shutout innings to help close out the win and even the fall series at two games apiece.

Drake went 2-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI, while Massenberg drove in a pair of runs to complement Medrano's huge day at the plate for Lawson's squad.

The fall world series comes to a close next week with 3 p.m., games Monday (Oct. 17) and Wednesday (Oct. 19).
