Team Mattson scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back in an 11-1 game seven win to earn a 4-3 series victory over Team Thomas in the conclusion of Missouri State baseball’s Fall World Series Wednesday at Hammons Field in a game that was shortened to eight innings due to darkness.
Team Mattson took a 2-0 lead in the first with RBI singles from Josh Mazzola and Dallas Hord, and increased the lead to 3-0 after Ben Carlson provided a sacrifice fly in the third.
Team Thomas threatened in a big way by loading the bases with no outs in the third. Nolan Keane drew a bases loaded walk before freshman southpaw Aaron Meade struck out three straight batters to preserve the 3-1 lead. Meade struck out six in five innings and allowed only the three hits to open the third.
Hord added another RBI hit in the fifth and Mazzola drove in a run in the sixth before Team Mattson scored six runs in the seventh. Curt Courtwright provided a two-run single and Hord chipped in another RBI hit as the big blows in the frame. Hord ended the game with a 4-for-5 showing at the plate and three RBIs.
Other notable performances for Team Mattson included Aaron Conway going 2-for-6 and scoring twice from the leadoff spot, Brayden Drake reaching base four times and scoring three runs, Mazzola driving in three runs and Matt Welch scoring twice with an RBI.
For the series, Drake hit .407 and scored 12 runs, Mazzola hit .367 with 12 RBIs, Hord batted .385 and Carlson drove in eight runs and slugged .560.
