2021-22 Season (Senior)
Appeared in seven meets … Spearheaded the MSU fleet in the 200 breaststroke by recording a fourth-place finish (1:59.83) at the MAC Championships (March 2-5) … Also placed fifth in the 100 backstroke (55.26) and was a member of the MAC runner-up 200 medley relay (1:27.77) … Recorded four wins and posted 11 top-five finishes.
2020-21 Season (Senior)
Appeared in all eight meets … Was a first-team All-MAC honoree… Won a gold medal in the 200 Breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:57.01 MAC Championships (April 8-10)… Finished second in the 100 breaststroke clocking in at 54.19 (MAC)… Swam the second leg of the 400 medley relay contributing to a runner-up finish (MAC) …Won the 100 breaststroke at Xavier (March 19)… Won the 200 breaststroke at SIU (March 6) and Drury (Jan. 16) … Posted 15 top-three times throughout the season.
2019-20 Season (Junior)
Selected as All-MVC first team member…Clinched gold medals in 100 breast and 400 medley relay, silver medalist in 200 breast and 200 medley relay at MAC Championships (March 4-7)…Made another championship podium appearance in 200 IM…Won three individual events and helped team to 200 medley relay victory at Kansas Double Dual (October 11-12), earning him MAC Swimmer of the Week laurels…Placed second in 100 breast at SMU Invite (November 21-23)…Swept 100 breast and 200 IM individual events and added a 400 medley relay win in home finale versus Evansville (January 11)…Led MSU finishers with top-10 time in 100 breast at Shamrock Invitational (January 24-25).
2017-18 Season (Freshman at Louisville)
Hampel appeared in two meets for the Cardinals during his freshman campaign, adding depth in the breaststroke events. At the TYR Pro Swim Series in Columbus, he placed 15th in the 200-meter breast (2:20.48) and 16th in the 100-meter breast (1:05.57). Against Michigan, he scored points in the 100 breast with a fifth place finish in a time of 59.73. He also competed in the 200 breast against the Wolverines, swimming a time of 2:11.09.
Background
The Owensboro Catholic High School senior was the 2016 Kentucky High School Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships runner-up in the 100 breast (56.41) and sixth-place finisher in the 200 IM (1:53.70). He also split a 24.18 breast on Owensboro Catholic’s 200 medley relay and anchored their 400 free relay in 46.88. Michael was a two-time NISCA All-American and the second fastest performer in KHSAA history in the 100 breast. Hampel’s year-round team is the Owensboro Marlins, with whom he had a strong long-course season, culminating in a gold medal in the men’s 100 meter breaststroke at the USA Swimming Futures Championships in Atlanta at the beginning of August 2016. Hampel was runner-up in the 200 breast, just .45 away from victory, and was a C-finalist in the 200 IM; he achieved PBs in all three events. Two weeks earlier he won both the 100 and 200 meter breaststrokes at the Kentucky 13-and-Over Long Course State Championships, and had earned new times in the 50/100/400/1500 freestyles.
