2017: Steinmetz turned in a banner sophomore campaign, eclipsing the .300 batting mark for the second straight year while establishing personal highs for runs scored (60), homers (7), RBIs (42) and walks (45) ... Batted leadoff in 62 of the Bears' 63 contests and swiped 10 bases in 12 tries ... Earned Second-Team All-Missouri Valley Conference, MVC All-Defensive Team and MVC Championship All-Tournament Team honors ... Logged 25 multi-hit games, which ranked second on the squad ... Hit in a season-best nine straight games, March 11-24, batting .429 (15-for-35) during the same stretch ... Hit streak was part of 18-game streak of reaching base safely via a hit, walk or HBP (Feb. 21-March 26) ... Recorded back-to-back multi-hit games on seven different occasions ... 2016: Logged a .317 batting mark and an MVC-best 14 stolen bases last spring en route to garnering Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America recognition from Collegiate Baseball ... Ranked among the league’s top 10 individuals in 11 different offensive categories overall, finishing second in the circuit in runs scored (57) and triples (7) and third in hits (78) ... Batted leadoff in every contest as a rookie and broke MSU’s freshman records for steals and triples ... Totaled 22 multi-hit games to rank second on the squad ... Logged a 19-game hit streak, March 5-April 2, over which he hit .452 (33-for-73), and reached safely via a hit, walk or hit by pitch in each of his first 29 games as a Bear (Feb. 19-April 6) ... Recorded three-hit games on seven occasions, with the Bears going 7-0 in those contests ... Flourished in the field as well, committing just two defensive miscues in 129 total chances for a .984 fielding percentage, while registering several memorable catches in center field; his diving grab against Kansas on April 6 netted a spot in ESPN Sports Center’s Top 10, before a pair of highlight-reel catches in the late innings of MSU’s MVC Tournament title game vs. DBU kept the Bears’ postseason hopes alive ... Registered 11 multi-hit games in his first 21 starts, including a 3-for-5 effort against Alcorn State (Feb. 27) that included the first of his seven triples on the year, as well as  a three-hit game vs. SIU Edwardsville on March 6 that helped MSU cap a three-game sweep of the Cougars ... Posted three-consecutive multi-hit outings in a sweep of Memphis (March 12-13), hitting .583 (7-for-12) ... Reached safely in all five trips to the plate vs. Western Illinois (March 16), going 2-for-2 with an inside-the-park homer, while walking three times and stealing a season-high three bases ... Scored six times with a torrid 7-for-11 stretch over three games vs. Iowa, Arkansas State and Minnesota (March 20-25) ... Drove in three runs to match a season high with a 3-for-5 day to help MSU knock off Wichita State (April 16) ... Hit in nine straight games, April 22-May 6, including seven in a row in MVC play ... Went 2-for-6 with a triple and three RBIs in the Bears’ 14-6 win over Arkansas (May 3) ... Had a three-hit game in a win over MVC champ DBU (May 15), then helped the Bears defeat Indiana State in the opening round of the MVC Championship with a 3-for-5 night in which he scored twice and drove home two more runs; recorded six hits and drove in six runs in six games at the Valley Tournament to help MSU to a runner-up finish.

Background: Brought his reputation as a speedster to the Bears’ lineup after pilfering 72 bases over his last three prep seasons at Springfield Parkview High School ... Broke the Vikings’ all-time record for stolen bases and capped his prep career by hitting .362 with 20 steals 31 runs scored as a senior ... Named to the Springfield News-Leader’s All-Ozarks team in each of his final two seasons and picked up the Springfield Lead-off Club’s Howard Bell Offensive Player of the Year award as a senior ... Hit .482 with three homers, 25 runs batted-in and 20 steals as a junior after swiping 32 bags while batting .384 en route to leading PHS to its second consecutive Ozarks Conference title and earning all-district laurels in 2013 ... Rated the No. 20 prep prospect in the class of 2015 by Prep Baseball Report, Earned Underclass Honorable Mention All-America recognition in 2014 from Perfect Game USA.
