The Missouri State Bears (2-1) head to Oral Roberts (1-2) for a 3 p.m. contest on Tuesday, Feb. 22, before traveling to Arlington, Texas, for a relocated home series with Cal Poly (1-2) on Feb. 26 and 27.
Starting 9
1) Missouri State took a series at Central Arkansas to open the season and will stay on the road this week for a Tuesday game at Oral Roberts and a series with Cal Poly that was relocated from Hammons Field to Arlington, Texas (Feb. 26-27) due to winter weather.
2) The Bears scored 34 runs in three games to open the season and emerged in the top 20 of several NCAA offensive categories including batting average (18th - .364), hits (13th - 44), home runs per game (12th - 2.0), slugging percentage (12th - .620), doubles per game (10th - 3.67) and sacrifice flies (3rd - 4).
3) Several players also rank among the NCAA statistical leaders, including
Hayden Moore (4th with 6 walks; 19th with 7 runs),
Spencer Nivens (10th with 8 hits; 19th with 7 runs),
Mason Hull (2nd with 3 home runs; 3rd with 10 RBI; 13th with 1.308 slugging percentage; 6th with 17 total bases).
4) MSU has a pair of preseason all-Missouri Valley Conference players this season in junior catcher
Drake Baldwin and senior reliever
Trey Ziegenbein. Baldwin put together a 21-game hit streak last season - sixth-best in school history - on the way to second-team all-Valley honors, while Ziegenbein was a first-teamer after going 8-2 overall and 6-1 with a 2.22 ERA in league games.
5) The Bears return seven of nine position starters and more than two-thirds of their offensive production from last season while adding 18 newcomers to the roster. Missouri State set a school record with a .978 fielding percentage last year, with MVC all-Defensive Team members
Mason Hull and
Grant Wood back on the infield to give the Bears four returning all-conference players.
6) Missouri State is 32-28 all-time against Oral Roberts with 14-20 record against the Golden Eagles in Tulsa. However, the Bears won 8-2 and 14-11 in Tulsa last season and have been victorious in their last five games at J.L. Johnson Stadium, last losing on April 2, 2014.
7) The Bears have been victorious the last 14 times they have scored in the first inning. The last loss after plating a run in the opening frame came on March 1, 2020 at Rice.
8) Head coach
Keith Guttin picked up his 1,300th career victory on April 13, 2021 at Missouri. Guttin's troops beat the Tigers 7-5 in Columbia, and the 40th-year coach currently ranks third among active coaches and 19th overall with 1,311 career wins.
9) The Bears had six victories last season in their final at bat. MSU won in 10 innings on March 30 at SEMO, and had walk-off wins on April 1 against Bradley (
Cam Cratic bases-loaded HBP), April 2 vs. BU (
Mason Hull single), April 6 versus Drury (
Drake Baldwin home run), May 7 versus Indiana State (Hull single) and May 21 versus Valpo (Hull double). In fact, five of Missouri State's last eight home victories have been of the walk-off variety.
