Bears Wrap Up Husker Invitational with Personal Bests

February 07, 2020

LINCOLN, Neb. – Missouri State track and field set multiple personal records at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational with the meet concluding here today (Feb. 8) at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

"Nebraska puts on a great meet and we had some athletes really take full advantage of the facility and level of competition," said head coach Jordan Fife.  "There's always learning to do, but as we compete in meets like these we are getting more and more used to the high level of competition and seeing what it takes to be successful at this level."

Day 2
Malia Watkins continued her impressive freshman campaign by posting the program's third-fastest indoor 200-meter time.  Her fifth-place time of 24.10 is the fastest indoor mark for a Missouri State sprinter since Shavonne Husbands ran a 23.97 in 2013.  Calandra Henry joined Watkins in the event, recording a personal-best time of 25.34.

In the mile, Edna Dar and Grace Breiten finished back-to-back with Dar (7th) clocking her first sub-five-minute time at 4:58.19.  Breiten followed right behind in eighth place at the 5:02.39 point.  Jasmine Crawford paced a 5:21.37 in her second entry in the mile this year.

In the field, Jessica Haney matched her season-best in the high jump with a clearance of 1.70 meters (5'7).  Her mark, which ranks fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference, earned sixth in the event after a tiebreaker placed the No. 2-6 finishers.

Kennedy Aurentz registered a 13.31-meters throw in the shot put which put her at 11th.

Talia Emerson's 10.82-meter mark in the triple jump placed her 19th, finishing right behind her sister, Tamia, who competes for Kansas City.  Olivia Richards (22nd) vaulted 10.72 meters for her longest jump of the season.

With a team consisting of India McNeill, Jayda Buchannan, Chanice Forbes, and Watkins, MSU set its highest time of the season in the 4x400-meter relay with a 3:49.11 to receive sixth place.

"Malia was very impressive today and she showed some great range which puts her in a great position moving forward," said Fife.  "It was exciting to see Shelby and Adyson establish very competitive indoor PR's in the 5k and Edna finally dip under 5:00 for the mile in a very tough field."

Day 1
Shelby Palmer and Adyson Delaney highlighted the Bears' day by finishing in the top-7 of the 5,000-meter run.  Palmer earned fifth place with her 17:47.12 time, clocking a few seconds ahead of Delaney (7th) who recorded a time of 17:56.18.

MSU was well-represented in the 400-meter run where eight Bears competed in the event.  India McNeill paced the group with a season-high time of 57.44 to place 17th.  Chanice Forbes and Jayda Buchannan followed McNeill by crossing the finish line at 58.06 and 58.54, respectively.  Mackenzie Ihasz (59.56), Briana Johnson (59.61), and Manuela Ngo Tonye Nyemeck (59.43) each finished under the one-minute mark.  Cassey Poole (1:00.33) and O'Shayla Muldrow (1:01.53) both posted personal-best times to round out the 400m for the Bears.

In the lone field event of the day for MSU, senior Jamilah James marked a 5.35-meter leap in the long jump to place 18th.

Malia Watkins ran a 7.71 in the prelims of the 60-meter dash, missing out on the finals by 0.12 seconds.  A'Mira Askew registered her fastest 60-meter time with a 7.83, trailing closely behind Calandra Henry (7.79).

Fife's squad returns to action next weekend with the Gorilla Classic on Feb. 14-15 in Pittsburg, Kan.
