Patriots Prevail in MVC Tournament Duel With Bears

NORMAL, Ill. – Despite a dominant combined mound effort from Davis Schwab and Hayden Juenger, Missouri State dropped a 1-0 pitcher's duel with Missouri Valley Conference regular-season co-champ DBU Wednesday afternoon on day two of the MVC Baseball Championship at Duffy Bass Field.

DBU's Jordan Martinson (8-3) stifled the Missouri State offense, teaming up with Burl Carraway on a three-hit shutout in the third-straight one-run contest for the Bears and Patriots in MVC Championship play. Martinson faced the minimum through five innings, retiring 14 consecutive hitters at one point. The left-hander struck out nine Bears in all before Carraway closed the door by escaping an eighth-inning jam and working around a Drew Millas hit in the ninth.

Schwab, who blanked the Patriots on one hit over 5.0 innings in the two clubs' last regular-season meet-ing on May 4, continued a late-season resurgence by allowing just two DBU baserunners through the first five frames.

The game's lone run came courtesy of a sixth-inning rally after Augie Isaacson started a string of four-straight Patriot batters reaching safely with his one-out base hit to left. After Blayne Jones singled on a well-placed bunt up the third-base line and Bryce Ball walked, Jimmy Glowenke slashed the first pitch he saw from Schwab into right field to plate Isaacson with the decisive tally.

Juenger quickly extinguished the rally with back-to-back strikeouts, but Martinson squashed any momentum the Bears (20-35) may have gained by fanning the side in the top of the seventh.

Mason Hull's leadoff double to left-center sparked a Missouri State threat in the eighth. The freshman moved over to third with just one out on Ben Whetstone's fly ball to center, but Carraway struck out Logan Geha, then induced an inning-ending roller to second off the bat of John Privitera to preserve the one-run lead.

Millas' one-out, infield single in the ninth once again put the potential tying run on base for the Bears, but Brooks Zimmerman's liner was snared by Glowenke at short for the second out and Anthony Herron Jr. grounded out to second for the final out.

Despite holding the Patriots (39-16) to a single run on five hits in his 5 1/3 innings, Schwab (3-5) took the tough-luck loss for MSU. The senior lefty fanned six and walked one, while Juenger retired all eight hitters he faced with four strikeouts.

Glowenke led DBU with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, recording a first-inning single prior to his critical base hit in the sixth.

Missouri State, which eclipsed a program single-season record with its 35th loss of the season, will face the loser of Wednesday afternoon's Illinois State-Southern Illinois match-up at 11 a.m. Thursday (May 23). DBU moves on to a 3 p.m. contest Thursday against the loser of tonight's Indiana State-Evansville tilt.
