Track and Field Bears Gear Up for MVC Indoor Championship


SPRINGFIELD - The Missouri State track and field team hits the road to Cedar Falls, Iowa, this weekend (Feb. 25-26) to compete in the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship. Hosted by Northern Iowa at the UNI Dome, Saturday's events will kick off at 9:30 a.m. with the pentathlon while the weight throw starts at 2 p.m. and running events beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday's action will start with the triple jump at 11 a.m. and the mile run will go at 1:25 p.m. Fans can follow the live results and watch the meet via The Valley on ESPN3 each day.

Keeping Track of the Bears
  • Missouri State was picked by league coaches to finish sixth at the indoor championship, the MVC announced Monday (Feb. 20). The Bears were projected as the sixth-best Valley squad in the preseason poll, released on December 6.
  • A total number of 24 student-athletes are projected to compete for the Bears in 15 individual events. MSU will also have a distance medley relay team and a 4x400-meter relay team competing.
  • The Bears have combined for 48 top-five performances after seven outings in the 2016-17 indoor season. Four student-athletes – Asha CaveDaijha HeronMarissa Kurtimah, and Brittany McPike – have each tallied at least three top-five performances in their respective individual events.
  • Four Bears – Shani AdamsAsha CaveDaijha Heron and Marissa Kurtimah – currently sit in the top-10 in the MVC in their respective events. Both the Bears' 4x400-meter relay and the distance medley relay are sitting at the fifth- and fourth-best times in the conference, respectively.
  • Director of track and field and cross country, Ronald Boyce, enters his 21stseason at the helm in 2016-17. In his time at MSU, his indoor and outdoor track and field teams have claimed nine Missouri Valley Conference Championships, the last being the 2012 indoor title, and have been Valley runners-up six times.
  • The Bears return five letterwinners – Shani AdamsMarissa KurtimahAsha CaveKadisha Francois and Daijha Heron – from last season's indoor squad. This group of student-athlete combined for 21 top-five finishes during the 2015-16 indoor season in their respective individual events.
  • Three 2016 All-Missouri Valley Conference performers return to the indoor squad, including Marissa Kurtimah, who broke the MSU school record in the 60-meter dash for the third and final time last season at the conference championships with a winning time of 7.37 seconds.
