AUSTIN, Texas -- The final day of the NCAA Track & Field Championships West Prelims here Saturday included Missouri State efforts in the 4x100 relay and the triple jump, but the Bears saw their season come to an end with MSU failing to make the national cut in either event.
After taking 23rd place in the long jump on Thursday night, Robiann Broomfield's effort to return to nationals in the triple jump were met with a competitive field in Austin. Her jump of 40 feet, 8 ¼ inches (12.40 meters) on Saturday afternoon was her third-best of the season, but placed her 27th and outside the cut of 12 national qualifiers from the Austin site. A year ago, Broomfield finished 22nd in the nation in the same event (12.72).
The Bears also competed in the 4x100-meter relay on Saturday with Marissa Kurtimah, Chelsey Borders, Holly Pattie-Belleli and Shavonne Husbands completing the oval in 45.72 seconds, the team's third-best mark of the year. The effort was the 22nd-best of the day, but just under a second off the pace of the top 12 teams advancing to nationals in Eugene, Ore.
"We had a very good season. I'm not disappointed at all," said Missouri State head coach Ron Boyce. "I thought we came out better that we thought in some events and not as good in some others. We would have loved to have some players at nationals, but to make it this far was something for us to be proud of."
Today's performances end the 2015 outdoor season for Missouri State, which finished fourth at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships, May 15-17.
