AUSTIN, Texas -- Day one at the NCAA Track & Field Championships West Prelims here Thursday saw Missouri State move three athletes through to the national quarterfinals in their respective events, including a season-best effort from sophomore sprinter Marissa Kurtimah.

Kurtimah turned in a time of 11.40 in the fourth heat of the 100-meter dash to move through to tomorrow evening's national quarterfinal heats with the 15th-fastest time of the day. Her mark placed her second in her heat and was the fastest by any Bear in the sprint event this season.

Junior Shavonne Husbands also competed in the 100-meter dash on Thursday, posting a time of 11.86 to finish 48th.

In the 400-meter hurdles, MSU moved a pair of juniors through to Friday's quarterfinals with Shani Adams turning in the 19th-best time (59.78) of the day in the 48-qualifier field, while Oarabile Babolayi registered the 21st-best time (1:00.14). Adams' mark was her second-fastest effort of the season, and the fourth-best by any MSU hurdler this spring.

There are three quarterfinal heats scheduled for both the 100-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles on Friday with the top three finishers, plus the next three fastest times, advancing to the NCAA Division I national championship meet in Eugene, Ore., June 11-13.

The only other Bear to compete Thursday was long jumper Robiann Broomfield whose effort of 19-feet, 8 ¼ inches (6.00 meters) was the 23rd-best in the field of 48. However, only the top 12 regional finishers in the field events advance to the national meet in Eugene.

"Today was a good day," said head coach Ron Boyce. "Everyone we felt might get through did, and it was good they performed and executed well. Marissa was a good surprise in the 100. That was the highlight of the day for us. We're excited about tomorrow and the four events we compete in."

On Friday, MSU will also send Kurtimah into competition in the 200-meter dash prelims, while Babolayi and Holly Pattie-Belleli will compete in the 100-meter hurdles opening round. The three-day event concludes Saturday with the Bears sending Broomfield into action in the triple jump, while the red-hot 4x100-meter relay team hits the track for the first time.
