OXFORD, Miss. - A triple jump victory by freshman Robiann Broomfield led the charge for the Missouri State track and field squad here Saturday (April 20) at the Ole Miss Open.

Broomfield demolished her personal best distance in the triple for the second week in a row. The native of Clarendon, Jamaica launched to a first-place distance of 12.73 meters, which ranks as the top mark this season in the Missouri Valley Conference and the ninth-best on the NCAA West Region list.

Senior Kimsue Grant was close behind her teammate with a leap of 12.71 meters to place second in the event. Junior Gemma Smith (11.45 meters) and freshman Me'Kayla Canady-McGee (10.67 meters) placed fifth and seventh, respectively.

Broomfield wasn't the only Missouri State freshman to impress, as three other MSU rookies set personal bests on Saturday. Cindy Forde placed fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:18.10. Meanwhile, Oarabile Babolayi raced the 400-meter hurdles in 59.86, also a season-best time for the Bears and the fourth-best mark in the MVC.

Canady-McGee rounded out the list with a new career-high leap in the long jump (5.23 meters), good for a top-10 placement.

Other notable Missouri State performances included strong showings by the team's sprinters. Sophomore Althia Maximilien earned a runner-up finish in the 400-meter dash by crossing the finish line in 54.32 seconds.

Freshman Shavonne Husbands (11.83) and junior Pernell Joseph (11.85) placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 100-meter dash. Joseph also earned a top-five finish in the 200 meters by racing to a time of 24.98 seconds.

Versatile sophomore Haley Scott set one personal best and tied another Saturday, as she raced to a new best time in the 100-meter hurdles (16.18) and tied her best mark in the high jump (1.50 meters).

The Bears return to action April 24-27 when they head to the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
