SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Missouri State baseball program received four commitments during the Spring 2011 National Letter of Intent signing period, head coach
Keith Guttin announced Monday. The four newest commitments join the six signees from the fall signing period to make up a 10-player incoming class for the 2011-12 academic year.
Tyler Burgess, LHP • Webb City, Mo. • Webb City HSA heralded 6-foot, 185-pound left-handed pitcher, Tyler Burgess was 3-1 with a 0.66 ERA and 38 strikeouts as of Signing Day, continuing his exceptional prep career with a solid start to his senior season. Burgess went 13-1 with a 0.75 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 93.2 innings as a junior, setting school records for starts (14), wins (13) and strikeouts in a game (18), while setting a state record with 12 complete games. Burgess earned all-district, all-conference, all-Ozarks, Webb City MVP and Pitcher of the Year, and academic all-state honors as Webb City finished the year as the Class 4 state runner-up. As a sophomore, Burgess was 7-3 with a 1.92 ERA, 74 strikeouts and one save in 54.2 innings. Burgess went 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA and two saves as a freshman for the Missouri Class 3 runners-up.
Mark McClelland, RHP • Lake St. Louis, Mo. • Wentzville Holt HS • Jefferson CollegeMcClelland is a 5-11, 180-pound right-handed pitcher at Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Mo. Through April 14, McClelland was 4-1 with a 3.52 ERA, 31 strikeouts and a .257 opponent average in 38.1 innings. McClelland spent his freshman season at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, Iowa, where he earned honorable mention all-conference and first-team academic all-region honors. He went 7-0 with a 3.73 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 62.2 innings at SCC. McClelland attended the same high school as former Bear and 2007 No. 6 overall draft pick Ross Detwiler.
Zach Merciez, RHP • Bartlesville, Okla. • Bartlesville HS The son of two Missouri State alums whose father played football for Jess Branch in the late 1980s, Zach Merciez is a 6-2, 190-pound right-handed pitcher from Bartlesville, Okla. As a junior, Merciez went 7-2 with a 2.29 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 55 innings for the Bruins. Merciez also served as the kicker for the Bartlesville football team that went 16-7 over the last two seasons and won the school’s first playoff game in 20 years in 2009.
Conner Wilson, 1B/OF • Strafford, Mo. • Strafford HSWilson is a prolific high school slugger from nearby Strafford, who has six homers and 21 RBIs through nine games of his senior season after belting nine homers with a .623 average and 53 RBIs as a junior. Wilson also slugged 1.232 last season with all-state, all-district, all-conference and all-Ozarks honors as the Indians finished 23-5 and advanced to the state quarterfinals. As a sophomore, Wilson batted leadoff and hit four homers to go with a .375 average and 28 walks as Strafford ended the season with a state runner-up finish. He earned all-state and all-conference honors that season as well. Wilson also starred on the basketball team for his father Mike, advancing to the Class 3 state title game in 2011 and going 52-7 his final two seasons on the hardwood.
