Scott Carroll went nine innings for the second consecutive outing and Ryan Mantle had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Missouri State baseball team to a 3-1 Missouri Valley Conference victory over Bradley Saturday afternoon at Hammons Field in Springfield.
The Bears extended their win streak to four games while improving to 19-12 overall and 4-4 in the MVC. BU dropped to 13-12 and 1-4 in the league.
After going nine innings in a no-decision last week at Illinois State, Carroll (3-0) went the distance with a complete-game five-hitter. The junior struck out eight and took the shutout into the ninth before Colby Luttrell hit a sacrifice fly to score an unearned run for the Braves.
For the sixth game in a row, Missouri State scored in the first inning. Nolan Keane got things started with a single to center, and Mantle followed with an RBI triple down the right field line for the 1-0 lead.
Brayden Drake and Dallas Hord were on base after each singled in the second, and Tanner Mattson lined a ball to center that Justin Carr dropped to allow Drake to come home and make the advantage 2-0.
Bradley starter Collin Brennan (1-3) retired 10 batters in row after giving up a leadoff double to Keane in the third, and went seven innings while being responsible for all three MSU runs.
Mantle added another RBI in the seventh, singling home Tanner Mattson with two outs to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Braves made things interesting in ninth, putting runners on second and third with one out after a dropped fly ball in the outfield. Luttrell flied out to left and Paul Rice tagged and scored from third on what should have been the final out of the game. Carroll then got Ryan Eigsti to ground out and end it.
Missouri State goes for the sweep at 1 p.m. Sunday.
