Missouri State baseball coach Keith Guttin has announced the commitment of five high school standouts and one junior college prospect to attend Missouri State. Tyler Bean, Brett Marshall, Travis McComack, Ryan Modglin, Trevor Rogers and Zak Swyhart have committed to the Bears and will be eligible to compete in the 2009 baseball season.
A 6-2, 195-pound right handed pitcher, Tyler Bean is a freshman at Allen County (Kan.) Community College this season after completing a standout career at Seaman High in Topeka, Kan., in 2007. He was the Kansas Class 5A Player of the Year as a senior after going 6-0 with a 0.25 ERA and five shutouts with one perfect game on the mound. His high school team won 41 straight games from 2005-06 and a state title in 2006. Bean’s high school teammate Ben Carlson is a sophomore first baseman for the Bears.
A catcher from Glendale High in Springfield, Brett Marshall will finish his career with the Falcons as a four-year starter. The 6-1, 190-pounder hit .326 with two homers and 10 RBIs as a junior to earn first-team all-conference and all-Ozarks honors while leading his team to a conference championship and top 10 ranking in the state.
Travis McComack is a 5-9, 150-pound shortstop from DeSoto, Mo. A starter each of his first three high school seasons, McComack has been an all-conference, all-district and all-metro selection each year and an all-state pick as a sophomore. He was recognized by Perfect Game as one the top 1,000 players in the nation this year.
Ryan Modglin is the lone two-way player in this year’s class, and is a senior at Scott City (Mo.) High. On the mound, he has six no-hitters to his credit, including four last year as a junior when he struck out 115 batters in 53 innings. He also hit .481 with 34 RBIs, four homers, four triples and 12 doubles last season to earn conference player of the year and all-state honors.
A 6-0, 180-pound infielder, Trevor Rogers is the first player in Magnolia (Ark.) High history to be a four-year starter. Last season, Rogers led the Panthers to a 27-5 record and runner-up state finish for the most wins in school history. He hit .490 with seven homers, four triples and 10 doubles and was an all-state and all-conference selection. As a sophomore, he hit .512 and was an all-conference pick.
Zak Swyhart is a 5-9, 165-pound switch hitting outfielder from St. Joseph, Mo. He is the first player from Central High in 30 years to sign with a Division I school, and hit .558 with 31 steals as a junior. He also had a .638 on-base percentage and .922 slugging figure. He is a two-time first-team all-conference selection and was a national finalist in the MLB Pitch, Hit and Run contest in 2004.
The 2008 season will be the Bears’ 26th year in Division I and also the 26th season for Coach Guttin, who enters the year with a 864-536 career record. It’s the 18th season for Missouri State in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Bears were 23-34 last season.
