BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Missouri State track and field team continued its season this weekend with several Bears recording top finishes at the two-day Bearcat Invitational.
The meet kicked off on Friday evening and was highlighted by several Bears in the Javelin throwing season bests. Rochelle Etienne led MSU in the event finishing third with a distance of 41.78 meters on her second attempt of the night. The throw was over three meters further than her finish at the Billiken Invitational a week previous. Jaide Rose came in right behind her, with a throw of 41.62 meters while Cheyenne White finished in sixth place (40.04m).
Action continued Saturday morning with field events to start the day. DaeLin Switzer jumped to a third-place finish in the high jump (1.63m), beating out her previous week's leap of 1.62 meters. In the long jump, Brooke Jenkins narrowly missed the top three, but jumped to a season-best mark of 5.68 meters, while Tamia Rayford finished sixth with a jump of 5.58 meters.
On the track, Etienne competed in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in sixth place with a time of 14.45 seconds, a season best in the event. Meghan Halstead competed in the 400-meter hurdles for the Bears, also earning a sixth-place finish with a time of 1:06.98.
After racing a qualifying time of 12.11 seconds in the 100-meter dash, Calandra Henry sprinted to a top-three finish in the event, coming in third with a time of 11.86. The mark narrowly missed her career best of 11.84, set the week previous. Henry also competed in the 200-meter for the Bears finishing in fourth place in a competitive field racing a time of 24.65. Charity Obazughanmwen continued her freshman outdoor season for MSU in the 400-meter on Saturday afternoon, earning a fifth-place finish of 58.89 seconds.
Sierra Williams was one of several Bears representing MSU in the 1,500-meter run, finishing in fourth place (4:37.55). Ashley Rolewicz and Claudrice McKoy finished in seventh and 13th, respectively, with season best times of 4:42.69 and 4:52.56.
In the 3,000-meter run, MSU had three runners finish in the top 10. Edna Dar led the way racing to third place (10:12.59) while Shelby Palmer ended the day in fifth (10:31.50). Margo Nea finished the day in eighth for the Bears, racing a time of 10:38.26, over 10 seconds better than her fastest indoor mark in the event.
"We accomplished a lot of great things today, most notably the amount of work we put in," said head coach Jordan Fife. "Sometimes these early season meets are great for loading up the athletes with good quality work. It also allows us to experiment with some new events. We'll certainly benefit down the stretch later in the season from days like today."
MSU will continue its season next weekend when the Bears head to the University of Arkansas to compete in the John McDonnell Invitational on Friday, April 8.
