SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State used a six-run second inning to propel itself to an 11-8 victory over Nevada Saturday afternoon at Hammons Field, hitting three home runs on the way to its seventh win in the last eight games.
Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Bears (12-8) took the lead for good with six runs in the second, their 10th time this season scoring at least five in an inning, with
Dakota Kotowski's 11th home run of the year starting the big rally. MSU scored six different ways in the inning, with the remaining runs coming home on an error, ground out, single, fielder's choice and bases-loaded hit by pitch.
Nevada (10-10) doubled home two runs in the fourth to make it 6-4,
Spencer Nivens answered with a solo homer in the bottom half, the Wolf Pack homered in the next half inning for a 7-5 score, and Nivens hit a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth for a 9-5 advantage as part of his 3-for-4, three-RBI day.
The visitors closed to 9-8 in the top of the sixth before
Trey Ziegenbein eventually settled things down out of the bullpen, tossing 3.2 scoreless frames with four strikeouts to end the game and earn his second save of the year.
Mason Hull added insurance in the form of a two-run home run in the eighth, his ninth of the season, for the 11-8 final.
Reece Lang threw four innings in the start and
Riyan Rodriguez (1-0) was credited with the win in 1.1 innings of relief.
Mason Greer went 3-for-4 and scored twice,
Cam Cratic went 2-for-3 with three runs, and
Grant Wood extended his streak of reaching safely to 20 games with a single and RBI.
The Bears go for the series sweep at 1 p.m. Sunday.
