SPRINGFIELD – Nevada scored seven runs in the final three innings Sunday for a come-from-behind 9-7 victory to salvage the final game of the three-game set at Hammons Field.
Missouri State, now 12-9 overall and going 7-2 on its homestand, led 3-0 after four batters thanks to a
Spencer Nivens walk,
Will Duff double,
Drake Baldwin RBI ground out and two-run homer from
Dakota Kotowski, his 12th of the season.
Jaden Rolffs belted a three-run homer in the fourth for a 6-2 lead before the Wolf Pack (11-10) began to chip away, scoring a run in the seventh and two in the eighth to make it 6-5.
The Bears' defense rose to the occasion in the eighth, however, with Kotowski throwing out the tying run at the plate from right field for a double play, and
Trey Ziegenbein covering home in time for the third out when Nevada tried to score on a wild pitch.
Nivens hit an RBI single in the eighth for a 7-5 lead, but the Nevada kept its foot on the gas in the ninth, tying the score after three batters and leading 8-7 on Pat Caulfield's go-ahead double. The Wolf Pack then swiped home on a double steal to complete a four-run inning. Missouri State was retired in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Ziegenbein (3-2) took the loss a day after a masterful relief outing, and Baldwin and Rolffs had two hits apiece.
Grant Wood reached safely for the 21st consecutive game thanks to a fourth-inning walk.
Missouri State begins a seven-game road trip Tuesday with a 6 p.m. game at Wichita State.
