NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma bounced back from a difficult opening-game loss against Missouri State with an 11-2 victory in game two of its series with the Bears Saturday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners used a five-run second inning and seven solid innings from starter Nathan Wiles to pull even in the series and avenge their 11-8 Friday setback to the Bears.
Wiles (4-0) struck out nine hitters and allowed just two runs on four hits and one walk to remain perfect on the year, while three different Sooners logged three-hit performances to lead OU's 13-hit attack.
Oklahoma (15-4), which saw an eight-run lead evaporate against the Bears Friday, followed a familiar pattern to establish an early advantage in game two of the series. After
Drew Millas homered to put the Bears on top in the first, the Sooners responded with a big inning to gain control of the contest.
OU, which built its game-one lead with a five-run fourth inning that included four consecutive hits, struck for five runs in the second inning Saturday, once again using a string of four-straight hits to gain the upper hand. Back-to-back singles by Tyler Hardman and Cade Cavalli opened the second against MSU starter
Logan Thomazin (1-2), before Brady Lindsly put the home club in front with a two-run triple to right-center.
A wild pitch allowed the third run of the inning to score, before Conor McKenna delivered his fourth hit of the series to spark the Sooners once again. Thomazin struck out Bradly Harlan, but plunked Diego Muniz before issuing back-to-back walks to Jordan Vujovich and Brandon Zaragoza to force home another baserunner. Brylie Ware then lofted a sacrifice fly to left, allowing Muniz to trot home for a 5-1 OU bulge.
Coming off two-straight 11-run outbursts, the MSU offense threatened against Wiles in the third, using a
Dakota Kotowski single and Millas's fifth walk of the weekend to put pressure on the Oklahoma right-hander. But Wiles avoided damage with an inning-ending punchout of
Joey Polak to maintain his three-run cushion.
The Bears (5-12) would break through in the fourth, however.
Sam Faith singled with one out, stole second, then came around on
Logan Geha's ground-rule double to left.
Cavalli put some much-needed distance between the Sooners and Bears in the home half of the fourth, launching a two-out, three-run homer to left to stake Wiles to an 8-2 lead.
He wouldn't need it. The junior only got stronger as the game progressed, retiring the last 11 hitters he faced in order following Geha's double. OU would tack on runs in the seventh and eighth as well, getting RBI singles from Harlan, Lindsly and McKenna to extend the lead further.
Cavalli led the way for OU, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs, and Lindsly added three hits and a trio of RBIs as well. Â
Hayden Juenger provided a bright spot for the MSU pitching staff, holding OU to one earned run on five hits while striking out four over 5 1/3 innings of relief.
The Bears and Sooners will conclude their series with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday.
