Bobcats Rout Bears to Conclude Opening Weekend

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Riding 6 2/3 scoreless innings from starting pitcher Connor Reich, Texas State handed Missouri State its second defeat in three games with a 10-0 decision Sunday afternoon on the final day of play at the season-opening Texas State Tournament at Bobcat Ballpark.

Reich (1-0) retired the first 15 Bears he faced and allowed just one baserunner on the day while striking out seven hitters. Joey Polak's single up the middle to start the sixth represented MSU's lone hit and baserunner against Reich, before relievers Kyle Bradford and Brent Hebert combined to shackle the Bears on just one additional hit over the final 2.1 innings to complete the two-hit shutout.

With Reich in control on the mound, the Bobcats offense clicked early and often as well, scoring in four of the first five frames to build a six-run cushion. Eight different TSU batters either scored a run or drove one home before the Bears would record their first baserunner of the contest.

Ryan Newman's one-out, RBI double opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, after MSU starter Alex Moore (0-1) allowed a single to Jaylen Hubbard and walked John Wuthrich. Skyler Valentine's ground ball to second plated a second tally to give Reich and the Bobcats all the offense they would need to notch their second victory in three games on the weekend.

Chase Evans, who went 3-for-3 with a stolen base and three RBIs, started another TSU rally with a leadoff single to start the second. After a Felipe Rodriguez tap back to the mound moved the runner into scoring position, Jacob Almendarez made it a 3-0 game with a run-scoring base hit.

A pair of one-out walks would haunt Moore and the Bears (1-2) in the third, as Jaxon Williams followed with a single to load the bases, and Evans chased home the fourth TSU run with a sac fly to right. Rodriguez delivered an RBI single to extend the lead to five runs and end Moore's day after 2 2/3 innings.

Freshman right-hander Logan Thomazin provided one of the few bright spots for MSU, escaping further damage in the third by retiring Almendarez on just one pitch. He would allow a run on an Evans RBI double in the fifth, but limited TSU to just two hits over his 3.1 innings.

The Bobcats (2-1) broke the game wide open with their three-run rally in the home half of the seventh, taking advantage of two walks, a pair of sacrifice bunts and a two-out MSU error to inflict their damage without the benefit of a hit.

In all, the bottom third of the TSU's starting lineup consisting of Evans, Rodriguez and Almendarez combined to go 5-for-9 with six RBIs and two runs scored. The Bobcats also benefited from eight walks from MSU pitching and a pair of free bases issued via hit batsmen.

Collin Clayton accounted for the second MSU hit with a ninth-inning single, while Nick Schmidt worked a scoreless inning of relief for MSU.

Up next, the Bears are scheduled to engage Oral Roberts in the first of a home-and-home series with the Golden Eagles this Tuesday (Feb. 19) with a 3 p.m. contest at J.L. Johnson Stadium in Tulsa, Okla.
