Missouri State travels to the University of Memphis for the first time since 2011 on Sunday (Sept. 4). Memphis holds the series edge over Missouri State, 6-5-2. The last meeting between the two programs was at the SMU Tournament in 2014 where the Bears and Tigers played to a double-overtime scoreless draw.
Scouting the Opponent
- The Bears haven't played in Tennessee since 2013 when MSU traveled to Belmont and is 4-8-1 when playing in the state (Belmont, Memphis and Vanderbilt). The last time Missouri State won in Tennessee was at Vanderbilt in 2002 by a golden goal in overtime.
- Nick Burtenshaw was named the first Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday (Aug. 29). The award was the first career accolade for Burtenshaw. Playing all but 11 minutes of the 2016 season opener, Burtenshaw helped save one of the only looks Green Bay had in the match. He also took two shots of his own to contribute to MSU's 18-1 shot advantage.
- Sophomore Jake Buckle contributed in a major way to the Bears' 2-0 win over Green Bay to open the season last Friday (Aug. 26). A member of the 2015 MVC All-Freshman Team, Buckle doubled his assist total from a season ago after contributing the game winning-goal for MSU in the 51st minute of the match and the Bears' second goal of the night, not even two minutes later. Buckle became the first Bear since 2013 to record two assists in a match.
Memphis is 1-1 on the season after opening the 2016 slate with a 1-0 victory at UAB before falling to Georgia State (4-1) in Atlanta. The Tigers will face Belmont on Friday (Sept. 2) in their first home game of the season before facing the Bears on Sunday (Sept. 4).
