TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Missouri State track and field team concluded the second day of the 2016 MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships later than planned after a rerun of the 100-meter dash prelims aided in MSU's effort to advance seven Bears to Sunday's finals in four events.
Due to technical difficulties with the timing equipment, eight student-athletes were forced to rerun the 100-meter dash at 7 p.m. (CDT), nearly two hours after the conclusion of their first attempt. Timers were able to capture the top-three finishers from the first running of the two heats that automatically qualified for Sunday's finals, which included MSU's Shavonne Husbands and Marissa Kurtimah who won the first and second heat, respectively. The non-qualifying competitors were given a second opportunity where the top-two finishers of the rerun would advance to Sunday's finals. After clocking in a time of 11.99 seconds, freshman Asha Cave was able to sneak into the finals after taking second-place.
Highlighting the second day of the championships for MSU was Holly Pattie-Belleli. The junior qualified for the long jump moments before finishing first in the 100-meter hurdles prelims, breaking the school record in the event for the second time this season after crossing the finish line in 13.27 seconds. Pattie-Belleli went to add five points to the MSU team total after finishing fourth in the long jump. Teammate Robiann Broomfield finished right behind her to collect four more points for the Bears.
Shani Adams and Oarabile Babolayi were able to finish fourth and eighth, respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles prelims to advance to Sunday's finals for MSU. Adams and Babolayi currently rank third and fourth, respectively, in the MVC going into Sunday's finals.
High jumper Betsy Borgsmiller added the finals points (1.5 points) of the afternoon to MSU's team total (14.5) after tying for seventh in the high jump after clearing 1.65 meters. There are still 10 events possible that the Bears can tally points in on the final day of the championships on Sunday.
Broomfield will be joined by teammate Daijha Heron in the triple jump on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CDT) to begin field events for MSU while the league-leading 4x100-meter relay team will start running events at approximately 12 p.m. (CDT).
