MURRAY, Ky. - The Missouri State track and field team went head-to-head with the Murray State Racers at the Margaret Simmons Invitational here Friday. The two teams battled it out as the Bears were able to collect 13 individual victories, a relay win and six meet records.
"We had fun Friday and were able to win many events but we did not take the competition lightly," commented head coach Ronald Boyce. "Our team was able to use this meet to get some extra work in which is important for us as we head into the better part of our season but there is still a lot of work to be done."
Junior thrower Melanie Raterman broke her own school record in the hammer throw with a throw of 52.47 meters. She recorded a mark of 49.82 meters at the Missouri Relays (April 12, 2014) her freshman year to break the school record for the first time and followed that performance last season with a heave of 51.67 meters at the conference championships.
Five individual meet records were shattered by the Bears as well as the 4x100-meter relay time. Shavonne Husbands led the way in the 100-meter dash, clocking in a winning time of 11.97 seconds in her first attempt this season. Fellow sprinter Marissa Kurtimah tried the 200-meter dash for the first time this season, crossing the finish line first in 24.69 seconds.
Kadisha Francois recorded a personal best in an event for the second week in a row, winning the 400-meter dash in 56.38 seconds.
Junior Holly Pattie-Belleli tallied two top-three finishes including a winning time of 13.97 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles.
On the field side, jumper Robiann Broomfield leapt to a MSU season-high 12.34 meters in the triple jump to set a new meet record and a first-place finish. Broomfield added to her first-place performances by jumping 5.63 meters in the long jump.
The Bears will test the track used for this year's MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the three-day Gibson Invitational beginning on April 7 in Terre Haute, Ind.
