RAYMORE, Mo. – Missouri State wrapped up play here Tuesday at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate, hosted by UMKC, with Bears' sophomore
Adam Fisher challenging for the tournament individual title to the final hole.
Â
Fisher bogeyed the 54
th and final hole of the event to finish with a 70-69-72—211 tally, five strokes under par and one behind eventual tourney champ Jake Chanen of Grand Canyon (210). Kansas State's Matt Green (211) kept pace with Fisher on the final day, and also tied for runner-up honors.
Â
Chanen bogeyed his last three holes, including a triple bogey on 17, to open the door for Fisher and Green to steal individual medalist honors. But his final tally of 66-71-73—210 was just good enough to earn top billing and lead his 'Lopes to the team title as well (868).
Â
Grand Canyon's had three individuals in the top five to hold off Kansas State (869) by a single stroke in the team standings. Host UMKC (872), Stephen F. Austin (874), Wichita State (877) and South Dakota (877) rounded out the top five team finishes, while SIU Edwardsville (888) edged out the Bears (892) for eighth place in the 12-team field.
Â
MSU's final round total of 300 was an improvement over Monday's second round and got the Bears back within striking distance of the field leaders. All five MSU players carded scores in the 70s on Tuesday, including Fisher's even-par 72 and a two-over 74 by junior
John Fuchs who tied for 28
th place.
Â
Fuchs was tournament co-leader on par-three holes, averaging 2.92 strokes, while Fisher averaged 3.93 on par-four holes, which ranked third in the field of 72 players.
