TULSA, Okla. - The Missouri State men's soccer team ended their preseason in a tough 2-1 loss at Tulsa's Hurricane Stadium on Friday evening.
Both teams' defense played a tough first period to keep the match scoreless. Liam Priestley for MSU picked up two saves with help from his teammates. Going into the locker rooms, both teams were fairly even across the board.
After halftime, both teams came out of the locker room hungry to get the ball into the net. In the 51st minute of the game, Tulsa put themselves on the board with a goal by Jordan Speed. Fifteen minutes later, the Bears answered with a goal by freshman Harry Lewis. Assisted by Phil Woods, Lewis was able to find the lower right corner of the net to get the ball right past Tulsa goalkeeper Jake McGuire from about six yards out.
The intensity from both teams grew as the remaining minutes of the game wound down. In the 84th minute, Tulsa was able to answer again with the ball sliding right past goalkeeper Priestley and the rest of the Bears to give Tulsa the 2-1 advantage.
MSU played a tough Tulsa squad and both teams fought a hard battle. Today's game was not a cake walk and both teams knew that going into it. "We're excited about practice tomorrow. We know what we need to do to improve. Our minds will be focused for our season opener next Friday," said head coach Jon Leamy.
Regular season for the Bears starts on Friday, Aug. 28 at the University of South Florida in Tampa at 6 p.m.
The Bears will host their first home game of the regular season on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium. The night has been coined a white out night with a Hawaiian twist. Fans are encouraged to wear white, or beach attire, as the Missouri State swimming and diving team will be in attendance and hosting a pregame tailgate.
