TULSA. Okla - The Missouri State Bears men's soccer team (1-1-0) dropped a tough road contest at Oral Roberts (1-0-0) in the second extra period of Monday's game. The Golden Eagles scored the game's lone goal in the 104th minute off the head of Johnny Chavez.
The Bears were clearly the attackers throughout the match, outshooting Oral Roberts 8-3 in the first half and 16-7 overall. The ORU goalie made five saves on the night to keep the home side alive.
The play of the game occurred in the 79th minute when Ryan Navarre stole possession in the midfield and began to counter. With a burst of speed, Navarre beat his defender and dropped the ball off to Brandon Barbero at the top of the box. Without hesitation, Barbero took the shot and the Golden Eagles' goalie Ben LaCourse went parallel to make a world-class save.
The Bears had a sequence in the first half, which was close to resulting in a goal as well. In the 13th minute, the Bears had a quality look at goal when Brandon Besong whipped a long throw into the box. After a brief deflection, Mikey Lightbourne launched a shot which the goalkeeper saved but allowed a rebound to the head of James Thomas. His second attempt landed just over the net.
In his first career start, sophomore goalkeeper Addison Watson stayed composed and played well on the few ORU chances he did see. Watson finished the game with 2 saves in his 103:21 in net.
"Addison played very well tonight," said head coach Jon Leamy. "We have some good depth at the keeper position, and it will be a tough decision going forward this season."
The Bears return to action on Saturday, Sept. 6 against the Kangaroos of UMKC. The 7:00 match will be played at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium on the Missouri State campus.
