Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Complete Release with List of Candidates

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Preseason All-MVC selections Heath Melugin and Jessica Teahan have been named candidates for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in men's and women's soccer, announced Tuesday. Melugin is one of five Missouri Valley Conference men's soccer players to make the list. Teahan, who returns as a two-time reigning All-MVC first-team goalkeeper, is the lone representative from the league.

Melugin returns as the Bears leading goal scorer from the past two seasons. His seven goals in 2010 were the most by a Bears since 2005 when Ryan Anderson netted 15 goals. Melugin earned a spot on the MVC All-Tournament team and the NSCAA All-Midwest Region second team. Off the field, he racked up the honors earning the MVC State Farm Good Neighbor Award, MVC Scholar-Athlete and CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District VII first team honors, as well as CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-America second team accolades.

Teahan started all 19 matches in net for the Bears in 2010. She went 8-6-3 with a 0.96 goals against average with five shutouts. In addition to the first-team all-conference honor, she was named to the MVC All-Tournament team, the MVC Scholar-Athlete first team and the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District VII second team. Entering her senior season, Teahan is in the top-5 in every goalkeeping category on the Missouri State career leaders list.

Sixty NCAA men's and women's soccer student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected as candidates on Tuesday for the award in collegiate soccer. Each of the 30 candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior Class Award winners during the 2011 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup Championships.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
