HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- For the second straight day, early mistakes by the Missouri State baseball team helped Southern Miss gain a lead that the Bears could not overcome, as the Golden Eagles rolled to a 13-3 victory Saturday at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, Miss.

    Todd McInnis (3-1), the NCAA’s active leader in career strikeouts entering Saturday, fanned eight Bears over six innings and allowed a Luke Voit RBI double in the sixth before turning the game over to the bullpen. Voit added a two-run homer in the eighth for the rest of MSU’s offense.

    Southern Miss took a 3-0 lead in the second, scoring its first two runs without the ball leaving the infield before Kameron Brunty doubled off the wall in left for the third run. The Bears failed to record an out while trying to force the lead runner on the first of two sacrifice bunts, letting USM runners on second and third with one out and setting up a single off pitcher Pierce Johnson’s glove and a weak ground out to third that drove home the first two runs.

    The Golden Eagles made it a 6-0 game in the third with three unearned runs. The Bears brought the infield in with runners on second and third and one out, getting a ground ball to first that Brent Seifert fired home to Voit, who applied the tag to the USM runner but dropped the ball. The Golden Eagles scored again when the next batter grounded out shortstop and got an RBI single for its third tally.

    The first seven USM hitters reached safely in the sixth, leading to six runs that included All-American B.A. Vollmuth’s third homer of the series. The Golden Eagles scored on a passed ball in the eighth for the 13-3 final.

    The Bears fell to 8-6 with the loss, while USM improved to 10-3.

    The series concludes at 1 p.m. Sunday.
