Lady Bears Top Missouri Southern 91-58 in Exhibition Finale

The Missouri State women's basketball team closed its exhibition season Saturday evening with a 91-58 victory over Missouri Southern in the I-44 Hoops Classic inside the Leggett and Platt Center in Joplin, Mo.

The Lady Bears drained eight threes on 15 attempts in the first half, including their first five field goal makes, on the way to a 44-21 halftime advantage. Casey Garrison and Karly Buer knocked down triples five seconds apart at the 16:30 mark thanks to an away-from-the-ball foul while Garrison's try was airborne, giving MSU its first lead and sparking a 14-0 run that pushed the score to 17-5 before the Lions ended a 6:17 scoring drought with two free throws.

Whitney Edie's jumper with 10:56 was MSU's first two-pointer of the contest, the Lady Bears went on another 7-0 run late in the period to make it 31-12, and a Garrison layup with 2:10 to play capped a 14-point half for the senior with a 22-point lead. Jaleshia Roberson drained her second trey with under 10 seconds remaining, joining Garrison, Edie and Buer with multiple makes from long range.

Missouri Southern began the second half by making seven of its first 11 shots to pull within 52-39 at the first media timeout. The Lady Bears regained the momentum with an 8-0 run that extended to 12-2 on a Buer bucket for a 64-42 lead. A Garrison layup made for MSU's largest lead yet at 68-44 with 8:31 remaining in the game and was part of a 13-0 run that put the Lady Bears ahead 77-44.

Garrison finished with a game-high 22 points and eight assists and the Lady Bears assisted on 26 of 35 field goals. Edie shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor with 18 points and five boards. Lacey Boshe pulled down eight rebounds and Bry Snow had seven as MSU out-rebounded the Lions 45-29.

Missouri State shot 51.5 percent from the field (35-68) and made 10 three-pointers. The defense forced MSSU into 19 turnovers and 38.6 percent shooting.

Missouri State opens the regular season Nov. 11 with a 7 p.m. contest at Louisiana Tech and begins the home schedule Nov. 13 at 2:05 p.m. against No. 9 Louisville.
