Missouri State sophomore
Aaron Meade took a no-hitter into the eighth inning Sunday and
Jon Barnes pitched a scoreless ninth as the baseball Bears handed Wichita State its second conference sweep in school history with a 2-0 win at Hammons Field.
Missouri State (23-14, 9-2 Missouri Valley Conference) had to put its mound dominance on hold for over four hours before the game as rain pushed the start time back to 5:16 p.m. from its scheduled one o’clock first pitch.
Meade (6-2) faced the minimum through three innings and squirmed out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the sixth to carry his no-hit bid through seven frames. WSU’s Mitch Caster lined a one-out single into right in the eighth, but Meade fanned Tyler Grimes and got Clinton McKeever to fly out to right to keep the shutout intact. Meade struck out six Shockers as well.
Jon Barnes took over in the ninth, working around a walk for his fourth save.
Chris Playter’s one-out double in the fourth brought
Brayden Drake around from first after a leadoff walk for the game’s first run, and
Travis McComack singled beyond the outstretched glove of Will Baez at second to score Playter on the next pitch to provide the only offense MSU needed.
Wichita State’s Jordan Cooper (5-4) went seven strong innings, giving up two runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts.
The Shockers fell to 20-18 overall and 5-5 in league play with their sixth straight loss, the longest streak in 32 years under Gene Stephenson.
The one-hitter was Missouri State’s first since Ross Detwiler held Creighton to one hit in the 2006 MVC Tournament, and the 11th such pitching effort since MSU moved to Division I in 1983.
Missouri State travels to Oklahoma State on Wednesday for a 6:30 contest with the Cowboys before a weekend league series at Evansville.
