Team Mattson’s offense took advantage of gusty winds blowing out while four pitchers combined for a shutout in a 13-0 win over Team Thomas in game five of the Missouri State baseball Fall World Series Sunday at Hammons Field.
Team Mattson jumped out to a 5-0 first-inning lead thanks to a pair of long balls. Aaron Conway led off the game with a hit by pitch and scored on Brayden Drake’s two-run homer. After Ben Carlson doubled off the center field wall and scored on an RBI single by Josh Mazzola, Ryan Mantle hammered a two-run shot for the five-run lead.
Neither team scored again until a seven-run eruption in the fifth. Matt Welch walked and Carlson singled to set up Mazzola’s two-run double. Mantle then drew a walk and Curt Courtwright used the strong south wind to his advantage to pull a three-run homer down the left field line.
Welch ended the scoring by driving in his team’s 13th run in the eighth. Everyone in the lineup scored a run for Team Mattson, and every starter recorded a hit with the exception of Conway, who was hit by a pitch and walked to reach base twice.
Carlson went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two walks to reach base safely in all five plate appearances, Mazzola totaled three RBIs and Welch finished the day with three RBIs on a 2-for-3 showing at the plate.
Freshman Mitch Kohnen got the start and took a no-hitter into the fifth before surrendering back-to-back hits to open the frame and end his day early. Sean Toler got out of the jam to preserve the shutout, pitching three innings with four strikeouts for the win. Pat Doyle and Brant Combs threw the eighth and ninth innings.
Brian Brown went 2-for-3 to record half of Team Thomas’ hits in the loss.
Game six of the series is Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m. at Hammons Field, weather permitting.
