The Missouri State volleyball team remained perfect in road MVC matches this season with a 3-0 sweep of Southern Illinois Friday at Davies Gymnasium in Carbondale, Ill. Scores in favor of the visiting Bears were 30-16, 30-26 and 30-22.
MSU improved to 12-4 overall and 5-1 in Valley play, while Southern Illinois fell to 8-9 and 3-4 in the league.
The Bears took early control of the match midway through the opening game. The teams traded points to a 7-7 tie before MSU went on an 11-2 run to take an 18-9 lead. Jamie Adams had five kills against no errors in the period, and Adeana McAfee had nine of her 18 digs for the match in game one. The Bears hit .378 (19-2-45) as a team in the first game.
Game two saw the teams play much closer, with Missouri State pulling out a 30-26 victory. Erin O’Connor and Katelyn Panzau each had four kills in the stanza without making an error. Panzau would finish the match with eight kills on 11 swings with no errors for a team season-high .727 hitting percentage.
Missouri State took control of game three from the beginning, jumping ahead 9-1 and coasting to the 30-22 win. O’Connor added another five kills to finish with 11 in the match, and Jamie Adams put away three balls on four swings to end up with a team-high 12 kills for the evening.
MSU more than doubled the Salukis’ hitting percentage, finishing at .294 for the match to SIU’s .139.
The Bears play at Evansville (10-8, 4-3 MVC) on Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
