Storylines for the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational
1) Missouri State opens the home schedule this weekend with the annual Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational in Hammons Student Center. The Bears (1-2) take on Little Rock at 6 p.m. Thursday, Northwestern State at 6:30 p.m. Friday and Indiana State at 3 p.m. Saturday.
2) The Bears are 5-2 all-time against Little Rock with three straight wins in the series, the last a sweep in 2021 in Conway, Ark. Mo State is 2-2 against the Trojans in Springfield.
Mo State won the only previous meeting with Northwestern State, a home sweep on Sept. 2, 2006 in the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational.
Missouri State is 75-4 against former Missouri Valley Conference foe Indiana State, including a 35-1 mark in Springfield, the lone blemish in five sets in 1994.
3) Sophomore and Preseason all-CUSA selection Hannah Gardner was one of four players nationally in 2025 with at least 180 kills, 480 assists and 210 digs. She collected a pair of triple-doubles on the season, the first by a freshman in school history.
Through one week this season, Gardner is the only player in Division I with at least 30 kills, 50 assists and 30 digs.
4) Missouri State has seven Missouri natives on the 2026 roster, including six who are from within 75 miles of the MSU campus.
5) MSU has ranked in the top 32 nationally in total digs in four of the last six seasons, finishing 10th in 2020-21, 11th in 2023, 32nd in 2022, and fourth in 2024. The Bears lead CUSA with 16.00 digs per set in 2026.
6) Mo State has notched the top six ace averages since the 25-point scoring era began in the last six seasons, with at least 1.24 per set in each season under Coach McRoberts.
7) Head coach Steven McRoberts is in his seventh season in Springfield and 30th overall as a head coach with 670 victories to his credit, good for 5th among active Division I coaches.
The Bears play the top three coaches in active wins this season, facing Stephen F. Austin (Debbie Humphreys, 1st, 870), Western Kentucky (Travis Hudson, 2nd, 809) and Sam Houston (Brenda Gray, 3rd, 790). Additionally, New Mexico State (Mike Jordan, 13th, 599) and Wichita State (Chris Lamb, 20th, 547) are also on the 2026 slate.
8) Second-year Missouri State assistant coach Lori Endicott-Vandersnick helped Team USA to a bronze medal in volleyball at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and was named the best setter at the '92 Games.
9) Hammons Student Center turns 50 this year, with its official opening on Sept. 17, 1976. Missouri State has posted 45 winning seasons in 49 years in the facility while winning 75 percent of its matches at HSC.
