Volleyball Falls to Shockers in Straight Sets

WICHITA, Kan. – Missouri State closed out the Shocker Volleyball Classic and its first trip to Wichita since 2016 with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-16) loss to the host Shockers Sunday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena.
Wichita State (2-1) finished each set on a significant run to earn the sweep, beginning with an 8-1 spurt to end the opening stanza. The first period was tied 11 early before the Bears (1-2) rattled off six in a row to lead 21-16, with Chloe Judd and Hannah Gardner each collecting a kill and combining for two blocks during that stretch. The Shockers countered with their 8-1 closing run for the win.
Mo State led 13-9 in the second set on a Lexi Weinberg kill, and Halle Kerkman scored three straight kills in response to a 5-0 WSU run to pull even at 19-19. The Bears led 21-20, only to see the home team score five of the last six for a 2-0 match lead.
The Shockers led wire to wire in the third set, hitting .359 in the final period with a 4-0 closing run to seal the victory.
Ashlyn Blazer led the Bears with eight kills, and five players had six or more winners. Gardner had a double-double with 16 assists and 12 digs, and Brooke Eslinger added a team-high 14 digs.
Missouri State makes its home debut on Sept. 3 against Little Rock at 6 p.m. in the opening match of the annual Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational at Hammons Student Center. Mo State also plays Northwestern State at 6:30 p.m. Friday and Indiana State at 3 p.m. Saturday to conclude the event.
