OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Missouri State's
Max Knight was honored Tuesday by the College Baseball Foundation as its national John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Week for games played April 21-27.
Â
Knight batted .357 with two homers and six RBIs last week, beginning with a 2-for-4 game against Missouri that he ended with a home run in the seventh inning for an 11-0 Bears victory.
Â
The sophomore from Bixby, Okla., hit a solo home run on Saturday against Evansville, then reached base safely four times in Sunday's series finale with two hits, two walks and three RBIs.
Â
On the mound, Knight pitched six shutout innings with 11 strikeouts and just three hits allowed. The southpaw earned the winning decision Tuesday against Missouri, then got the four-inning save with nine strikeouts Friday against Evansville. His nine Ks against the Purple Aces were the most by an MSU reliever since 2016.
Â
Knight was named to the award's 35-player watch list earlier this month. The award is named for former Washington State University standout John Olerud, who achieved success both as a first baseman and left-handed pitcher during the late 1980s. He was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. The winner will be announced on June 17.
Â
Missouri State is on the road this weekend with a May 2-4 series at Illinois State.
