MONTGOMERY, Texas -- The Missouri State men's golf team opened its spring season Monday (Feb. 12) with mixed results, landing in eighth place after 36 holes at the Bentwater Intercollegiate. The Bears began were quick out of the gate, posting a 291 morning round to take the lead on the 13-team field before slipping to a 305 in the afternoon for a 596 total with 18 holes remaining on Tuesday.
Senior
Hampus Wijkstrom paved the way for MSU, carding 71-72--143, one-over-par and tied for sixth place after two trips around the par 71, 6788-yard Miller Course at Bentwater Country Club. He sits just four shots off the lead in search of his second tournament title of the season after winning the Grover Page Classic in the fall.
Wijkstrom's younger brother, Ludvig, a junior, is next for the Bears in a tie for 31st after shooting 70-79--149, while senior
Eric Schuessler is tied for 44th with 76-76--152. Senior
Max Kreikemeier carded 74-80--154 and is tied for 54th, while freshman
Max Bowman is 72nd after posting 84-78--162.
Host Sam Houston State will take the lead into Tuesday's 8 a.m. shotgun start after posting 296-278--574 on Monday. Western Kentucky is the closest pursuer at 579, with Stephen F. Austin third with 585, Tarleton State fourth at 589 and UTSA fifth at 592. UT Arlington (593), Rice (595), the Bears, Midland Community College (597) and Southern Illinois (597) round out the top 10.
