MADISON, Ill. -- Missouri State senior
Hampus Wijkstrom continued his sizzling early-season play Tuesday (Sept. 26), breaking his own school record set just a week ago and finishing second at the Derek Dolenc Invitational at Gateway Golf Links.
The senior from Saltsjobaden, Sweden fired 66-70-65--201 to finish four strokes behind Dax Isbell of UT-Martin. Wijkstrom was named Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week last week after winning the Grover Page Classic with a 202 total and is 28-under-par over his last two tournaments.
As a team, the Bears also shattered their previous school record, posting 277-288-279--844 to eclipse the old mark by four shots. They placed fifth in the 16-team field to finish off a strong three-week start to their season that has seen multiple school records fall.
Host SIU-Edwardsville captured its own tournament with 818 over the three rounds, while UT-Martin (829), New Orleans (841), Weber State (842) and the Bears rounded out the top five.
Senior
Max Kreikemeier was second for MSU and 31st overall after shooting 72-70-72--214, while the Bears' third senior,
Eric Schuessler, tallied 70-76-70-=216 to finish tied for 42nd. Sophomore
Christian Rischer tied for 49th with 69-77-72--218 and freshman
Andrew Fallis carded 74-72-77--223 to tie for 64th. Junior
Ludvig Wijkstrom tied for 24th while playing as an individual after posting 74-69-69--212.
The Bears are idle next week before returning to action Oct. 9-10 at the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational in Wichita, Kan.
