SPRINGFIELD – Behind a three-goal effort, the Missouri State men's soccer team added a mark to the win column Monday night, shutting out Lindenwood, 3-0.
"It was good to welcome another team from Missouri to Springfield and to the Division I level. Tonight, was a good challenge for our guys and it was a good, solid, 3-0, win," said assistant coach Jordan Valentine. "We had a lot of rotation in the squad, with numerous guys stepping up and playing well. We are excited for the team to compete again at home on Saturday against UTRGV."
The Bears (2-0-2) came out with an aggressive offensive attack in the first half at Allison South Stadium, pushing the pace and firing off 13 shots through the first 45-minute period. In the 11th minute, one connected with the back of the net. Off an assist from Nicolo Mulatero, Jon Koka headed in his first goal of the season to give the Bears the early advantage.
In the second half, it was more of the same for MSU, as the Bears continued to control the match. In the 50th minute, the home team increased its lead off the second header of the evening, this time from Jesus Barea. The goal marks the junior's second of the season with his first coming against UC Santa Barbara in the first match of the season.
With 13 minutes left in the match, the Bears added their final goal of the evening. After newcomer Daniel Normann drew a foul inside the box, Kian Yari's goal sailed into the upper left corner of the net, increasing MSU's lead to 3-0.
The Bears also put forth a stout defensive effort, only allowing Lindenwood to get off four shots through the match's 90 minutes. Harry Townsend made two saves on the evening, helping secure the shutout win for the Bears.
"We had a great crowd tonight," said head coach Michael Seabolt. "A big thank you to our fans for coming out and supporting."
MSU continues its season on its home turf this weekend, when the Bears host the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m.
