Men’s Soccer Puts Away UTRGV with Late Goals

SPRINGFIELD –
A pair of Bears' goals in the 75th minute by Aadne Bruseth and Kian Yari Saturday night helped Missouri State overcome a stingy UTRGV defensive performance at home, 2-0.

"Full credit to the guys to play well, and to play hard for 90 minutes," said head coach Michael Seabolt. "A shutout and two goals is a great win."

The Bears (3-0-2) set the offensive pace early in the game, controlling possession for the majority of the match's first 45 minutes. MSU fired off six shots in the opening half, putting one on goal.

In the second half, UTRGV continued to put up a stout defensive front, but in the 75th minute, the Bears broke the mold. Yari's shot assisted by Giacomo Sala sailed past the Vaquero's goalie into the upper right-hand corner of the net, giving MSU the 1-0 advantage with 15 minutes to go.

The senior midfielder gave the Bears the spark they needed. Seconds later, it was Bruseth's turn to reach the back of the net off assist from Jon Koka and Adrian Barosen to increase the Bears' lead to 2-0. The goals mark both players' second of the season.

The Bears continued to thrive defensively, only allowing three shots through the match's 90 minutes. The win marks MSU's fourth shutout of the season and fourth straight, as the Bears have not allowed a goal since the team's first match of its 2022 campaign.

MSU continues its eight-game home stretch on Friday, Sept. 16, when the Bears host the University of California, Northridge at 7 p.m.
