SPRINGFIELD – Behind a two-goal effort from Nicolo Mulatero, the Missouri State men's soccer team (1-0-1) earned its first outright win of the season Sunday night, defeating UC Irvine, 3-0.
"This was a great win for the guys, and it was great to get three points," said head coach Michael Seabolt. "It was a great effort by the whole squad, whether the guys started or came in as substitutes, they added. We're excited for Friday."
The Bears fired off four shots in the opening minutes, failing to find the net but putting three of them on goal. In the 30th minute of action at Allison South Stadium, Mulatero accomplished the feat, firing a quick shot past the UC Irvine goalkeeper's head off an assist from Jesus Barea to give the Bears the 1-0 lead.
Early in the second half, Mulatero struck again. After drawing a foul inside the box in the 58th minute, his penalty kick effortlessly sailed past UC Irvine's Luke Pruter, extending the Bears' lead to 2-0.
The Bears weren't done. With 19 minutes left on the clock, senior Aadne Bruseth scored his first goal of the season, off Barea's second assist of the night.
MSU's strong defensive effort only allowed UC Irvine to take six shots throughout the match, while goalkeeper Harry Townsend did his part keeping the Anteaters at bay, earning a clean sheet while recording three saves.
Two games into an eight-game home stand, the Bears will stay in Springfield, hosting Air Force on Friday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.
