SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State dropped game two of its series with Southern Illinois by a 5-1 final Saturday at Hammons Field.
Despite out-hitting the Salukis 5-4, Missouri State was only able to score on
Grant Wood's fifth home run of the season in the seventh inning, adding three singles and a double without drawing a walk from SIU pitching on the day. The Bears (22-21, 5-9 Missouri Valley Conference) only struck out four times, hitting a number of balls hard but at Saluki defenders.
Two of SIU's hits came in the third inning, mixing in with two walks to help the Salukis (33-13, 10-4) take a 2-0 lead.
SIU added a solo homer in the fifth and then loaded the bases on an infield single, walk and hit batter in the ninth before scoring on a ground out and sacrifice fly to make it 5-1.
Forrest Barnes struck out six in a season-high six innings in the start.
Drake Baldwin's career-best streak of 30 consecutive games reaching safely came to an end.
The series concludes at 11 a.m. Sunday.
