Baseball Takes Down SLU 13-5 for Fifth Straight Win

Season Statistics

SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State scored 11 unanswered runs while the bullpen shut out visiting Saint Louis for the final seven innings Wednesday evening at Hammons Field as the Bears extended their winning streak to five with a 13-5 victory.

Missouri State (19-18) put up double figures for the 12th time this season to become first Division I baseball program in the state with a victory over each of the other three (SLU, SEMO and Missouri) in 2022.

The Bears had 28 batters reach safely and knocked seven extra-base hits, led by Spencer Nivens' 3-for-4 effort with three runs and three RBI and Grant Wood driving in four runs with a pair of doubles and two sac flies.

Wood hit a two-run double in the first inning but the Bears trailed SLU (21-17) by a 5-2 tally after the Billikens hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the first and a grand slam in the second.

MSU did not allow a run after that, starting its comeback with two in the fourth on Dakota Kotowski's 19th homer of the season and a Nivens RBI single.

Hayden Moore hit a pinch-hit, two-run double in the sixth to put the Bears ahead for good and Wood added a sac fly to make it 7-5, and the Bears scored six times in the seventh for their 16th inning of five or more this season.

Nivens smacked a two-run double, Wood lifted his second sac fly of the game, Jaden Rolffs had a two-run single and Mason Hull hit an RBI single to cap the scoring at 13-5.

Riyan Rodriguez (2-0) tossed two innings of hitless relief for the mound victory.

The Bears head on the road for the fourth time in five weeks for an April 29-May series at Indiana State (21-11, 6-3 Missouri Valley Conference).
