Missouri State takes the momentum of a strong spring season into the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship, which runs Sunday thru Tuesday (Apr. 17-19) at Greenbriar Hills Country Club in Kirkwood, Mo.
The Bears were the pre-season favorite of the league's coaches to win their fifth conference title and have posted top-five finishes in all four of their spring events, including the championship of the Diane Daugherty Invitational in St. Charles, Mo., three weeks ago in a field that included nine of the 10 Valley schools. Their other finishes this spring have included third at the Jackrabbit and ORU Invitationals, and fifth at Rio Verde. MSU is the top-ranked team by
Golfstat entering the tournament, just ahead of Illinois State.
The Bears and the league's nine other teams will tee it up beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday and Tuesday at Greenbriar, which will play to a par 71 and 5,830 yards for the tournament.Â
Evansville was the surprise winner a year ago while MSU finished fourth. The Bears won back-to-back MVC titles in 2017 and '18, and previously won in 2001 and 2012.
The Bears are led by 2019 MVC medalist and '2020 Golfer of the YearÂ
Abby Cavaiani, who leads the league with a 74.07 scoring average. She's posted a victory and three other top-five finishes in nine events this season. Sophomore
Kayla Pfitzner has enjoyed a breakthrough season, currently ranking fifth in the conference with a 75.78 scoring mark.
Arielle Keating has given the Bears a lift after transferring at the semester from Florida Atlantic and posting a 75.33 mark, which would place her fourth in scoring, however she falls short of the minimum 60 percent of the team's rounds to qualify.
Brooke Newell and
Allison Bray will round out the Bears' lineup after ranking 15th and 20th in the Valley, respectively, with 77.26 and 77.67 scoring averages. Newell placed fifth at the aforementioned Daugherty Invitational three weeks ago and Bray tied for ninth at last week's ORU Invitational, where the Bears finished third.
