Baseball Falls in Both Ends of DH Versus Evansville

Season Statistics

SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State finished its weekend series with Evansville Saturday with a pair of losses, falling 9-2 and 14-2 to the Purple Aces at Hammons Field.

The Bears fell to 14-17 overall and 0-6 in Missouri Valley Conference play, while UE improved to 19-16 and 4-2 in league games.

The Bears hit the road on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. game at Missouri.

Game 1 Recap (Evansville won, 9-2)
Forrest Barnes allowed a run on three hits in six strong innings before Evansville broke the game open with a six-run eighth.

The game was scoreless into the sixth, UE got a two-out, pinch-hit double from Eric Roberts to drive in the first run, and collected three consecutive two-out hits in the seventh for a 3-0 advantage.

Drake Baldwin walked with the bases loaded in the seventh to put Missouri State on the board, and the first four Aces reached in the eighth to set the stage for a six-run frame, with five scoring with two out and the big blow a three-run homer by Evan Berkey.

Mason Greer drove in Drew Townsend with a sacrifice fly in the ninth for the 9-2 final. Grant Wood and Walker Jenkins each had two hits for the Bears.

Game 2 Recap (Evansville won, 14-2)
A promising start for MSU's Jake McMahill against his former team was derailed in the third inning, as he retired the first seven Aces he faced before three in a row reached based, the third hitting a two-run double.

UE added a three-run homer in the fifth for a 5-0 lead, and Grant Wood drove in Baldwin with a single to center in the sixth for MSU's first run.

The Aces added a two-run homer in the seventh, sac fly in the eighth and six more runs in the ninth.

Walker Jenkins added an RBI single for the Bears in the ninth.

Jenkins, Hayden Moore and Wood each collected two hits for the offense, with Jenkins running his hitting streak to 10 games. Spencer Nivens singled in both games to extend his streak of reaching safely to 26 consecutive games.
